SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer can exhibit slow start up behavior, may run slowly or crash unexpectedly if the Preferences become corrupted.
Occasionally a Windows Update may prevent SnapGene from starting. If you find SnapGene fails to start after a Windows update then please try the solution in this article.

Delete the SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer Preferences
To fix the issue, click to expand the appropriate section below and follow the instructions to delete your SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer Preferences file.
On macOS do the following:
Quit SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer.
Run the Terminal Application.
Copy and paste the following command into the Terminal application and hit return.
open ~/.config/GSLBiotech
This will open a hidden GSLBiotech folder in the Finder.
SnapGene users should move the SnapGene.ini
file, and any other files starting SnapGene.ini.*
, to the Bin.
SnapGene Viewer users should move the SnapGene Viewer.ini
file to the bin.
On Windows do the following:
Quit SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer.
Copy the following text.
%appdata%\GSLBiotech
Click on Windows Search, paste (CTRL-v) and hit return. This will open the hidden AppData\Roaming\GSLBiotech folder

Select and delete the enclosed SnapGene.ini
file.
SnapGene Viewer users should delete the SnapGene Viewer.ini
file.
On Linux do the following:
Quit SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer.
Run the Terminal program.
SnapGene users should use the following commands to delete SnapGene preferences.
cd ~/.snapgene
rm settings.ini
SnapGene Viewer users should use the following commands to delete SnapGene Viewer preferences.
cd ~/.snapgene-viewer
rm settings.ini
Run SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer
Once you have deleted the SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer Preferences file, run the software, a new Preferences file will be created.
SnapGene or SnapGene Viewer will start as if run for the first time. Enter the requested information to start using the software.
